Overview

Conventional approaches to urban development typically fail to tackle either structural or identity-based exclusion. Certain groups are likely to be further excluded from power and resources on the basis of characteristics such as (dis)ability, age and gender. Residents of low-income communities are increasingly joining forces, within and across settlements, to challenge these forces of exclusion. In doing so, they are establishing platforms for partnership with local authorities and other stakeholders, to shift the sociopolitical processes that perpetuate and compound urban inequalities, in order to ensure the principle that ‘no one is left behind’.
