Cascoland
Interventions In Public Space
Overview
In Johannesburg, South Africa, Drill Hall, de Bell saw a city with a public space crisis. With a handful of artists and some courage, de Bell and her colleagues transformed the South African city's most dangerous zones into fashion runways, public gardens, urban playgrounds, and even a bed and breakfast. Called Cascoland, de Bell's project activated public spaces and engaged residents, fostering a newfound sense of security. With full-color photographs on nearly every page, this slim exhibition catalog chronicles the artists' interventions in urban areas and their successful efforts to encourage residents and artists alike to shape and mobilize their own public spaces.
