Introduction to Geographic Information Systems and Applications

This is an in-person workshop spanning four days. Learning outcomes are (a) understanding Geographic Information Systems (GIS) concepts and data formats, as well as general IS concepts such as relational databases and data types; (b) working with GIS software (QGIS) to view, edit, style, and create maps from datasets; (c) understanding and applying GIS analyses on real-world scenarios using QGIS, including spatial joins, buffer analysis, and overlay operations; and (d) collecting geospatial data in the field using mobile phones.

Instructor

Abdelrahman leads the Data Lab team at Transport for Cairo (TfC), where he oversees data-related activities across the organisation. His work spans project design and development, stakeholder engagement, and quality assurance. A core part of his role is designing data collection and integration processes in contexts where data is typically scarce. Abdelrahman is a strong advocate for free and open-source software and open data and brings this ethos into how TfC approaches its data work.
