They Have Clocks, We Have Time

“They Have Clocks, We Have Time” is an expression we have heard a few times in Kanaky, where the cyclicity of the clocks may reinforce the colonial order, but its end is only... a matter of time. The idea that people living under colonial rule “have time” can seem counterintuitive at first glance. However, we can associate this with another idea: the perspective of colonialism as a temporal parenthesis, as Kanak President of New Caledonia’s Congress Roch Wamytan articulates.
Both of these ideas related to time may seem presumptuous in being brought forward by us, who are not experiencing colonial violence. Yet, there is something undoubtedly potent in refusing the temporal scale of colonialism as the “beginning” and “end” of stolen land.

From 11 to 20 June, 2026, MEGAWRA and BIAS-AME welcome The Funambulist to reflect on its decade-long journey shaping the pedagogical and political approaches to the built environment as well as its publishing practice that has operated at the crossroads of architecture, academia, and activism.

This intervention borrows its title from the 36th issue of the magazine, inviting the viewers to examine the relationship between temporal structures and spatial infrastructures and their role in materializing forces of political domination as well as various forms of resistance against these forces. The reflections extend to how the movement of time alters, expands, and challenges the public and intimate registers of our practices.

May al-Ibrashy and Léopold Lambert discuss the journeys both The Funambulist and Megawra have undertaken over the years and look back in time to Léopold's last visit to Cairo in 2015, a few months before the magazine's first issue was published.

Léopold walks the viewers through the reading room with access to the print archive of the magazine, the dedicated listening corners for their podcast episodes, and the exhibition featuring visual and cartographic excerpts from their pages.
You are invited to join us in thinking about how challenging both the uniformity and the linearity of time can significantly alter our understanding of reality and our political engagement within it.

The Funambulist is a bilingual print and online magazine that engages with the politics of space and bodies. By formulating spatial approaches to anticolonial, antiracist, queer, and feminist struggles around the world, the platform seeks to develop ideas, visuals, and maps in service of these fights to expand our shared political imaginaries. It aims to nourish internationalist solidarities that learn with each other, considering each geography to be a knowledge-production center, from which it is invited to think and imagine with a pluriverse of voices.

Megawra – BEC is a twinship between Megawra, an architectural office specialising in conservation and heritage management, and the Built Environment Collective, an NGO specialising in place-based cultural and urban development. They partner to run Athar Lina, an initiative working in Historic Cairo within a mandate of heritage as a driver for development. Athar Lina works in al-Khalifa in an integrated participatory manner on heritage conservation and adaptive reuse, heritage education, and on socio-economic empowerment through heritage industries and urban regeneration linked to environmental sustainability.
