Bio

Omar Aboutaleb is an Urban Researcher and currently an Assistant Professor of Practice at the Architecture and Urban Design department in Nile University. His research focuses on understanding the synergies between public policies and cultural practices shaping the built environment within academic discourse. To contribute to local knowledge production and urban practices, Omar fuses culture with traditional research methodologies, including observation, documentation, experimentation, and analysis.
In the last 9 years, Omar has participated in multiple urban development projects at the intersection of public space upgrade and community participation in Egypt, Jordan, and Germany.
In Active Mobility, he worked as a Knowledge Management Officer and Urban Researcher at “Tabdeel”, and for five years as a committee member in making Egypt’s “Planning and Design Guidelines for Bicycle Networks” at the Housing and Building National Research Center.
Aboutaleb obtained an Urban Management and Development M.Sc. from IHS, Erasmus University Rotterdam, and another M.Sc. in Urban Design from TUBerlin. In 2019, he obtained his Bachelor's in Architecture Engineering from MSA University in Cairo.

Ecologies of Cities

This module explores urban environments through ecological and systems thinking, viewing cities as ecosystems with significant impacts on surrounding landscapes. It examines urban environmental histories and contemporary challenges like climate change, species extinction, loss of natural system complexity, and resource insecurities. The module also explores systems-based ecological design typologies for urban intervention, focusing on their implications for environmental quality and justice.
